Five Tips for Planning a Barn Wedding

Barns are full of history and stories which gives them unique charm. And there's no better place to have a barn wedding than in the south. They offer so many possibilities. Barns are versatile; you can dress them up, or keep them natural with country, rustic or vintage decor. Surrounding fields, flowers and meadows offer breathtaking backdrops for photographs.

Keep in mind though, there is more to planning a barn wedding than meets the eye. There are considerations like barn extras, pesky insects and weather. Here are 5 tips to get you started.

1. Set aside a Budget for Barn Extras

Many barn venues are not full service. You may be responsible for tables, chairs, tableware, linens, and a caterer. Most venues have a preferred vendor list for the things you'll need. Also, consider the cost of additional lighting like candles, string lights, and paper lanterns. Plus, you'll want to add your own unique spin with decor like metal lanterns, mason jars and wooden ceremony signs. The backup plan for the outdoor ceremony may include the cost of a tent, if it rains.

2. Accessibility to the Ceremony Area

Get the lay of the land and do a site walk. Discuss property and locations for ceremony, reception and parking. Make sure the ceremony area is car and wheel friendly for elderly guests.

3. Footwear

A rustic barn wedding often means rustic floors. Make sure your guests know what type of shoes to wear. Make a note on the invitation, or on your wedding website. If you're planning to change shoes for the reception, make sure your bridal salon or seamstress make hem adjustments to your gown.

4. Uninvited Insects

Fireflies and chirping cicadas can be very romantic. But what about those pesky biting insects? Make sure to stock up on citronella candles and have them set up around the wedding venue. Put together a small basket filled with bug spray for guests to use. Place near the bathrooms.

5. Climate Control

Make sure the venue comes with both heat and air conditioning. Nothing is worse than being too cold or too hot at a wedding. On hot summer days, keep your guests cool with pretty paper fans. You might also have a basket of sunscreen and paper parasols. Have umbrellas on hand if rain is in the forecast.

No wedding is ever the same. A barn wedding has character and versatility.

Let your personality shine through. You can mix rustic and chic, simple and sophisticated. Create your own rustic ballroom and wear an elegant gown. Or you can be laid back with less traditional attire. It's all up to you.
